“We’ll get there,” said Tim McCallion, who sits on the museum board and executive committee. “Will it be hard work? Yes, but we’ll get there.” McCallion, president of the West Region for Verizon Communications Inc., was honored at last week’s gala for shepherding a $1 million grant to the museum from the Verizon Foundation. He and his wife, Anne, also believed so strongly in creating a world-class children’s museum for Los Angeles that they pledged $100,000 of their own money. McCallion said donors will be more apt to contribute to the museum now that its walls and roof are complete. “I’m like, really patient,” said 8-year-old Lauren Montes of Northridge, who once emptied her piggy bank of $2.75 to help it along. “I feel excited about the opening. I can wait.” [email protected] (818) 713-3730160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! You’re all set! Dierking was forced out Nov. 10 for failing to raise the $14 million needed to complete the $52 million museum near Hansen Dam. Since then, a nationwide search has narrowed to three candidates, with a museum head expected to be announced this month. “We want someone who has a passion for this, who cares about children, who can articulate it – (and) who can raise money,” said Corwin, who declined to discuss the candidates. Last week, the museum raised $405,000 at its first banquet fundraiser at the Beverly Hills Hotel. A San Fernando Valley fundraiser is in the works, possibly for December, at the Universal Sheraton. LAKE VIEW TERRACE – Sluggish fundraising could push back the opening of the Children’s Museum of Los Angeles up to six months, officials said Monday. The partially completed museum, scheduled to open this fall, might not open its doors until the following spring. “We’re not going to make it,” said Bruce Corwin, co-chairman of the museum board. “Realistically, it’ll be the end of this year or spring of 2008. We’re going to open when we’re ready to open.” Officials attributed the delay to the high cost of steel as well as low contributions after the loss of Executive Director Mark Dierking three months ago.
Brett McGinty was defeated in controversial circumstances in his Junior European Championship bout against Croatian Mladen Sobjeslavski .Brett McGinty was left ‘gutted’ following a controversial decision that resulted in his exit at the Junior European Championships.McGinty was competing against Mladen Sobjeslavski and looked like he was in control of the bout early on.The St Johnston based boxer looked classy and composed in the opening two rounds and seemed to have won both comfortably. That sparked a reaction from his opponent Mladen Sobjeslavski and he upped the tempo in the final round.Sobjeslavski might have shaded the last round as he had to chase it, as it looked as if he’d lost the first two rounds. There was then shock and surprise when the referee raised the arm of the Croatian fighter Mladen Sobjeslavski.McGinty looked visibly stunned as did the rest of his back-room team, there was further surprise when the judges scored the contest 3-0 in favour of Sobjeslavski.
